May Daze 2010

The CW Event Team just finished up a busy Memorial Day weekend at May Daze Horse Trials at the Kentucky Horse Park. It was great to see everyone out showing. I rode five horses this weekend so I was really busy and apologize I did not have time to visit much.
I rode two horses in the Novice Horse division. Going to Seattle finished 14th in the division on a 48.5 and Ready for April finished 11th with a 47.0. I was happy with the performance both of these greener horses had this weekend as they both moved up a level.
In the Open Novice division I rode, Quite a Lady, (owned by Jane Beshear), and she was phenomenal! She finished on her dressage score of a 27.8 and in first place!!
In the Open Training division I rode, Action Now and Maggie. Action finished 12th at his first time at this level. He was good in his dressage and jumped a beautiful clear round in the show jumping. He also was clear x-c but incurred a few time faults as I showed him the water before asking him to jump over the log in to it. He has been a bit looky there and I wanted to insure success. It worked very well as he jumped very bravely in after knowing exactly where he was going! Maggie jumped around the show jumping but unfortunately had a heal grab so I decided it best to withdraw her for XC on Sat.
I will be in and out of town over the next few weeks teaching clinics and such so please check my calendar and schedule your lessons! Right now there is a little lull in the horse trial schedule so let’s get some homework done and make sure those tools are in your tool box before your next horse trial!
We have several new pictures posted throughout the web page! When you have time, check them out!
Until next time, keep kicking!

VA Horse Trials

The CW Event Team just returned from a very successful weekend at the Virginia Horse Trials.
I only took Ready for April but had several students competing so I stayed very busy. Ready was more obedient in dressage than he has been in the past but I am most impressed with how well he jumped around the show jumping course in the large coliseum. That atmosphere can really rattle some horses but he jumped around there like a champ! He finished 6th overall for the weekend on his dressage score of a 39.5.
It was a fun weekend and it seems all my students are reaping the rewards of their hard work. I will be competing and coaching at Maydaze next weekend. Make sure you schedule your lessons and check the farm answering machine for course walk times.

What we’ve been up to…..

The CW Event Team has been very busy the past few weeks. After returning home from the CCI 1* with Simba in Florida, I was busy helping the O’Connor Event Team at Rolex. That week is always very busy for me and this year was no exception.

Almost as soon as Rolex came to an end, I was on a plane to Texas for my continueing education that is required to stay current for my course designing license. We were on the go the entire time I was there. It was held at Greenwood Farm in Weatherford, TX and it was a super event….may put it on the schedule for next year!

I returned home for a week before heading back to Houston, TX to teach a clinic at Cornerstone Farm in Conroe. It was a fun weekend. I really enjoy meeting new people and helping them move forward with their riding. I was able to provide them with several additional tools for their toolboxes.

On Thursday the CW Event Team will head to the Virginia Horse Trials and CCI 1*. I am only taking Ready, but will be coaching many of my students there. I know it will be a fun weekend!

Maydaze is quickly approaching so be sure to schedule your lessons. I will record course walk times on the answering machine at the barn closer to the event so please be sure to call and check when your course walk is.

Check back for updates from Virginia and until then….., Keep Kicking!

Florida International 3- Day Event

The CW Event Team returned home last Monday from the Florida International CCI 2*/CCI 1* and HT located in Ocala, FL.
I pulled out of Carriage Station early Monday morning on April 12th to head back to Longwood. On Monday and Tuesday I was able to get lessons from Karen. Simba felt great and his lengenthings have gotten much better because he is so much stronger. On Wednesday we moved the horses over to the Florida Horse Park to complete the In- Barn inspections for the three FEI horses that made the trip.
On Thursday Simba did his first formal CCI 1* jog. He behaved very well and passed easily. Later that same day Simba and I did our Dressage test.
Simba was very obedient in the ring and scored a 54.10 putting us in a tie for 9th place. On Friday, I walked the CCI 1* course for Amanda and myself and also the CCI 2* course with Suzie. Simba enjoyed a nice hack around the park on Friday.
On Saturday, Simba ran cross country. We went later in the day so heat could have easily been a factor. Optimum Time for the CCI 1* was 7:10. Of course, in the end, heat was not a factor. Simba went out on course and went right to work. He was dead on everywhere and never drifted off any line. We jumped a double clean round. He came into the finish vet box with a temperature of 102.1 and a respiration of about 90 and on his second check his temperature was down to 101 and respiration under 80. He cooled down very quickly.
Sunday morning Simba looked great as we headed up for our final inspection. The Ground Jury passed him without hesitation. The CCI 1* horses were to start their Show Jumping at 12:30. The course seemed to pose some issues as I watched rails fall all morning in the OI and CCI 2* divisions. Simba and I went in to show jumping and dropped three rails early in the course. Once I came through fences 5a & 5b, we both seemed to get on the same page and I rode the canter he had to the fences and he did not touch another rail.
It feels great to have completed Simba’s first CCI 1* event with a qualifying score. I started this horse from the beginning and we made it here together. He will get a little bit of a break before we start up again and our homework this summer will be in the dressage and show jumping areas. I may be making some changes to my summer and fall calendar so be sure you check back often.
I want to thank everyone for a great weekend and I’d like to thank my Mom for coming with me to Florida to support me and watch Simba successfully complete his first CCI 1*! Spring Bay HT

The CW Event Team was in full swing this past weekend. We stayed close to home and took some of the greener horses to Spring Bay Horse Trials. The weather was perfect and it was nice to see everyone out having a great time.
I rode five horses total in the Beginner Novice and Novice divisions and had seven students competing at various levels. Here is a recap of the horses I rode this weekend.
Ready For April completed his 2nd event. He scored a 39.5 in dressage and finished 7th in the Open BN division on that score. He felt very brave and confident this weekend in both jumping phases.
Gointoseattle (owned by Gay Darcie), also competed in the Open BN division. This was his first event. He scored a 40.5 in dressage and finished 9th on that score adding no additional penalties. This OTTB was very relaxed in all three phases.
One, Two, Three Step was off to a great start this weekend scoring a 34.8 in dressage and jumping clean around the show jumping course. Unfortunately, Saturday night he somehow cut his leg in the field and I decided to withdraw him from competition on Sunday.
I entered Maggie in the Open Novice division where she scored a 30.5 in dressage and added no additional penalties to her score and finished 5th. This mare will be moving up to Training level at May Daze. She has been very successful and consistent at Novice and we are ready to continue that at Training.
Action Now scored a 42.5 in dressage and show jumped clean on Saturday. Sunday morning found us with lots of dew on the ground and only front shoes and no stud holes. Action Now had a “slip” before the water and although I did not have to circle, we did not take the most direct route into the water and picked up and additional 20 penalty points. We did manage to wiggle up to it and once he saw it, he went right in and through.
I am currently on my way back down to Ocala, Fl to compete and coach at the Florida CCI 1* and CCI 2* competition that will begin with in- barns on Wednesday and CCI 1* dressage on Thursday after the first formal inspection. I will spend the next few days taking a lesson or two from Karen and David, teaching Amanda Volle, my groom on her CCI 1* mount, Lucky Teddy, as well as riding Suzie Romej’s mare, Let’s Be Frank, until she arrives in FL later in the week to compete in the CCI 2*.
My Mom, Kitty Wieschhoff, is traveling along with me to see Simba compete in his first CCI 1*. As many of you know, Simba is out of my 4* mare that my Mom found for me many years ago in England. This weekend will be very special for her and she wanted to be here, in person, to see Simba compete!
I will keep you posted as the weekend unfolds!
